UMaine was founded in 1862, with the help of President Lincoln, who signed a function of the Morrill Act, and it was officially established in 1865, under the name of Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts. The current name of University of Maine was adopted in 1897, being previously known as Maine College.
Since it opened its doors to students, UMaine grew, and has today an enrollment of approximately 12 000 students, being the largest university in the state and the only research university in Maine, according to Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The UMaine athletic teams are known as the Maine Black Bears, which compete in the NCAA's Division I, in various sports, including in the Colonial Athletic Association for football, in the Hockey East for ice hockey, and in the America East Conference for all other sports areas. The Black Bears are best known for their achievements in football and ice hockey games, and they are the only athletic team from Maine which competes in a bowl contest (Tangerine Bowl).
